Nairobi — Imagining the Nairobi Metro

Five sketches exploring another layer of mobility beneath the existing city.

For years, I have explored the possibility of an underground network for Nairobi: another layer of mobility capable of connecting more people and places while supporting a more equitable and sustainable city.

These sketches are part of an ongoing series of conceptual explorations. They test how stations, tunnels and interchanges might weave beneath existing infrastructure and connect with the streets and public spaces above.

The locations range from Tom Mboya Street and the Kimathi Street–Kenyatta Avenue junction to Railway City, the Haile Selassie–Railway District and the Nairobi Expressway. Each sketch considers the meeting point between metropolitan movement and everyday urban life.

Cities are imagined before they are built. For me, urban sketching is a way to test possibilities, open conversations and make future spatial relationships visible.
